Bladder Stones |
| |
Bladder stones are not uncommon
in turtles but happen more frequently in tortoises.
Uric acid is the compound that the stones are
actually formed from. Unless something is already
seriously wrong with your turtle or tortoise it
will take years for these stones to reach a substantial
size. However when they do reach a size that is
large enough to cause damage they can be hard
to get rid of.
If left untreated the stones will continue to
grow to the point that they can be fatal, however
there are almost always signs of bladder stones
before they reach this size. Difficulty with urination
or trouble walking are some of the more common
signs. If your turtle is exhibiting any of these
signs it is suggested that you take your turtle
or tortoise to the veterinarian immediately. Extensive
surgery is usually required to remove the bladder
stones from your pet.
